MY FRIENDS AND I.......... Episode 2
A FRIEND'S DEATH.
"And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment: so Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many; and unto them that look for him shall he appear the second time without sin unto salvation. - Hebrews 9:27-28".
Throughout my days of treatments at the hospital, I was neither allowed to take water nor food, just what they call Intravenous fluids or IV(Drip). I remember I was always craving for food everyday(as per the foodie wey I be ðĪŠð), so most of the times I result to shouting or singing.
Unknown to me, there was a man who listens to me when I sing and in admiration, asks about me from people around. When I started taking edibles, I started with a drop of water, to one teaspoon per day, to two, gradually I started taking lucozade boost, ribena and all.
Few weeks later, the doctors broke the "SHE CAN START EATING" news, my mum's joy knew no bound, and I was so very happy that I can finally start to eat again after 3months of compulsory fast. Food per week at the hospital cost about N5,000, which is a no-go area for us. Because, how my mum could provide the money for treatments was a miracle. The best thing is for me to wait till evening before I eat.
This man on the other hand was an Alhaji. I guess he does not have appetite and N5,000 every week is always a waste of money. "Call me the mother of that girl that sings everyday when she arrives", he told the nurse that attended to him one afternoon.
My mum arrived in the evening and the message was relayed to her, on getting to Alhaji's bed, he said, "Good Afternoon madam, I want my food to always go to your daughter everyday for the rest of the days she would be here". My mum's joy knew no bound because, it saved her the stress of having to worry about what I'd eat.
That's how I started to eat Alhaji's food on his behalf and he was really happy seeing me happy. Few days later, Nurses and Doctors were going up and down, requesting for oxygen and whatever it is that could be used to save a man's life. Rising from my bed, tracing the steps and voices, my eyes landed on Alhaji's bed(my heartbeat at that moment rose), 30 mins later, a body was wrapped in a white cloth and pushed out of the ward. It was Alhaji's ðĨð.
That day was one of the saddest day in my life because what, why??… He was a really good man, the reason for his demise is what I don't get, his short stay in my life was really impactful, if not in words, in deeds, I learnt something. Even the testimonies of people around drove total strangers to tears, his death was really a big loss.
How long have you been friend with your friends?
How does it feel when you left your circle?
Was it an emotional exit or the other way round?
Can you guess their reaction when they remember you?
It is not how far but how well, right?...…. Life, for some people is not a bed of rose and for some, it is, but whether it is a bed of rose or not, how useful were you?...… One thing I've come to realize in this life is that everything we have in this life is "VANITY UPON VANITY", the Yoruba would say that "KO S'OHUN TA MU WA S'ILE AIYE YI, KO S'OHUN T'AMA MU LO" meaning, "WE CAME INTO THIS WORLD WITH NOTHING, WE WOULD LEAVE WITH NOTHING". Alhaji for example, was a very rich man but he was buried with NOTHING. Just like the bible text at the beginning, one can only die once, that is why we are advised to DO GOOD, that is the reason Pastors shout the word "REPENT" all the time, because we cannot undo the bad things we do/did while we're alive, dead.
If you come across anybody, make an impact, no impact is too small. No matter how rich you are or how poor I am, we all would end up owning the same property "6ft", whether you like it or not.
So dear friends, live your life like you won't see the next day. "Arrogance for this life no go pay you at all, stay humble, be free and be at peace with everyone". Life is too short to go about with shoulder pads, last last, na "6ft" go be our mansion.
Again, I say unto you guys, STAY HUMBLE.
If in anyway you feel you've not been good enough, especially in the aspect of making people feel good, I want you to say this prayer:-
Lord Jesus, thank you for the opportunity that you have given me to realize that NO ONE LIVES FOREVER. Father, I ask that you grant me the Grace to be good to others, regardless the challenges I face, and help me not to feel proud while at it. Amen!!!
Thanks guys for reading, I hope you enjoyed and learnt something today's episode of My Friends and I...…. See you all in the next episode.
